Parliament’s don’t ask, don’t tell view of Constitution

The cavalcade of identity confusion continues in the federal parliament with Labor backbencher Justine Keay announcing today she would refer her case to the High Court. Despite taking steps to renounce her British citizenship prior to nominating, the Tasmanian MP was a British citizen on the date of the election.

In the ugly partisan to and fro bargaining between the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader over what is to be done to bring this crisis of confidence in the parliament to an end, what is being offered from both sides is little more than a protection racket for those of their number who are still hiding under rocks.

Apparently the answer, rather like a good shampoo and conditioner, is to rinse and repeat.

For the many Australians who have not seriously considered a run at the federal parliament, it will be instructive to learn that the nomination form issued by the Australian Electoral Commission for all candidates to the federal parliament features a word-for-word reproduction of Section 44 of the Australian Constitution.

Goodness me, Mr Insider, I read that Mark Kenny of the SMH saying that a disastrous end to 2017 means 2018 could be even worse! He goes on to say in the linked article that failing governments, like fish, usually begin stinking from the head down. The “head of the stinking fish” is currently in Vietnam but old “Fishy” Turnbull soon returns to give us all another dollop of his failed politics. I keep hearing ex ousted PM Abbott laughing hysterically in my mind. Milton and Carl too!

Millions of tons of dead fish on the coast around Da Nang this time last year Henry. Might have been an omen.

    • Milton says:

I say Henry I see the more clear sighted of the Kenny brothers has penned a piece on my man Abbott (Mk2).

    • Jean Baptiste says:

Could get even funnier Henry. Someone might even have a real red hot go at the firewall around Abbott too!

      • Boadicea says:

It’s quite fun dropping in a remark there sometimes and watching the resultant redness outrage.
But an article about that family offering forgiveness to that woman who killed their child accidentally resulted in a most disgusting anti-muslim rant by some arsehole.
        Comments were promptly withdrawn.

        • Boadicea says:

Redness should read redneck. Bloody phone.

          • Trivalve says:

I got it anyhow Boa (I see red, I see red, I see red)

I would have been shocked if there hadn’t been an anti-muslim rant., the direction of which would be complicated by the fact that she killed a muslim child. I presume the correspondent was more upset about the damage to a dinky-di Aussie classroom wall?

  • Milton says:

And on other OT serious matters, Aussies v Honduras Saturday morning 9ish. Some away goals would be to the good.

  • Milton says:

Rather than let these people sort this out themselves why not send in the Federal police? You would think un-constitutional behaviour was worthy of serious attention.

  • Bella says:

What a joke Australia has become & with no end in sight….
Exactly why can’t the GG order a full audit of all our politicians?
No playing political games, no stalling, no under the radar stuff, just get to the truth on every one of them yet to show proof.

Please let’s quickly end this stupid farce then have a federal election so we can somehow purge the memory of the most inept & callous government in our history.

OS once again, Turnbull looks very tired & ten years older than he is.
Ambition hey? So not worth it.

    • Henry Blofeld says:

Spot on Bella yes lets have an Election now! Cheers

      • Uncle Quentin says:

Mal cant risk another double dissolution, last one let in that odious Hanson woman and her trio of clowns, and they are drawing off support from the right of the coalition.
In any case there is no trigger, no legislation the senate has rejected twice. He can’t call another half senate election till August next year. He could call an election for the reps but the lack of respect for the government means a landslide win for labor or at very least a labor minority government. Plus the senate will be out of whack.
Minority government until they lose a confidence motion…

  • BASSMAN says:

Stan must refer all Labor pollies to the High Court. Goose, gander etc.

  • Rhys Needham says:

I wonder who’d be the first politician to refer another who gets caught out making false statutory declarations, knowing the probability that it’ll likely start never-ending rounds of tit-for-tat referrals?

Looks like with One Notion that they run character tests and if you fail miserably, they endorse you as a candidate.

  • Milton says:

Come on, who reads what they’re signing these days??
I’m sure if one of us miswrote or didn’t wrote something on our tax forms, or Centrelink forms or some such and it came to light that we’d been taking money from the Government that we weren’t entitled to it would all be smoothed over and made light of.

  • Carl on the Coast says:

Stone the crows! Do we really have to argue the toss over an issue that the majority of Aussies probably couldn’t give a continental about just because a few true blues may have made a bit of a balls up in playing it by ear when they put their monikers on a stat dec that may not have been everyone’s cup of tea but believing she’ll be right mate, no worries.

Crikey, its probably been going on for yonks and now some of them have suddenly dropped their bundle and thrown in the towel.

    Sad times ahead indeed.

    • smoke says:

      “Sad times ahead indeed.”
coming down from this rollicking high was never gunna be ez

    • Jean Baptiste says:

Well said Carl. It’s a zero sum game of which the most benefits will go to the biggest ratbags by default. Assuming they don’t get pinged too. We have to ask ourselves would we have voted for them anyway? And if not why not?
A decent dual citizen might play harder for Australia than a dinky di on the make.

Give ’em heaps me old mate.

  • Henry Blofeld says:

What a shocker PM Turnbull’s “scrambled egg” Parliament is Mr Insider and as you say Shorten no help either to make matters worse. These so called Political Representatives of ours are a disgrace and an insult to the hardworking Aussie Taxpayer imho. Lets have a new Federal Election to clear the mess up and woe betide anyone who transgresses with Section 44 of the Australian Constitution, “porridge” time for them as big money is on offer as a Pollie. The days of hiding under rocks and being protected are over. I do wonder in times gone by, Mr Insider, who may have gotten away with being a Citizen of another Country? Strewth, surely Sir Robert Menzies was Aussie to his bootstraps!

  • Razor says:

It’s a game for most of these people JTI. They are about power and prestige and all the trappings this entails. Most have worked for this since University. They cannot stand the thought of being ousted and reduced to the fate of the common man. They will do anything, including lie, to stay.

It’s time to dissolve both houses and go to the people.

    • smoke says:

      and elect the same

      • Jean Baptiste says:

Yep! Darn right smoke. What we need is our own Donald Trump, with a foreign model wife to promise to make Australia great again. Then we might finally learn the trajectory of ahem, shuffle, snigger, “democracy” is unerringly in the direction of the lowest common denominator.

I mi even have a slash at this meself. How does “Bluey Damper” sound?

    • Henry Blofeld says:

With you there Razor as I said also in my post. Election time is now! Cheers
