Australia’s second-hand secrets

Psst. Anyone know where I can get my hands on some top-secret documents?

Never mind. It turns out they can be purchased in second-hand stores. Look for locked filing cabinets without keys, collapsible document files that read “Top Secret” or “AUSEO” (Australian Eyes Only), or brown paper bags marked “Cabinet-in-Confidence”.

Welcome to the thigh-slapping comedy that is the commonwealth of Australia.

Perhaps we shouldn’t be too harsh. This could be a brilliant ruse. Certainly, the Chinese will be completely confounded by it. They’ve been spending the big bucks on electronic surveillance and satellite tracking to get access to national security information when all they really needed was to drive around Canberra and do a spot of low-level antiquing.

Whilst people are out antiquing could they keep an eye out for a Cone of Silence in good condition please.

  • Carl on the Coast says:

Not only do they appear to be “second-hand secrets”, they’re also reportedly ambidextrous.

    • Henry Blofeld says:

I see your man Tony Abbott got a big mention in them too Carl and not in a good light either. “Surprise, surprise” as Gomer Pyle used to say. Cheers

    • Jean Baptiste says:

I wouldn’t know offhand. STOP IT!

    • Mack the Knife says:

Could be a third or fourth hand secrets Carl as they were cabinet papers inside cabinets.

Funny how Penny Wong says the cabinets were left there locked because a staffer had left who had the keys. No spares left with someone responsible? Smacks of incompetence or or a breach of security protocol to me, but Penny insists she takes security matters very seriously. Yep, Blind Freddy can see that.

      • The Outsider says:

So you reckon that every Minister is personally responsible for their all their Department’s filing cabinets, Mack?

Give us all a break, eh?

        • Carl on the Coast says:

But a covering doc referring to 195 separate t-s and c/w-p docs were reportedly found in Wong’s office shortly after she skedaddled post the 2013 election. The various unprotected docs were apparently bundled with the covering note and placed in the fcs during the time Labor were licking their shellacing.

At least an alleged misdemeanor on the Minister’s part one would have thought.

        • Mack the Knife says:

The buck has to stop somewhere, Labor or Liberal. Bit touchy ain’t ya?

Having seen The Post just yesterday, I’m wondering about high-speed photocopiers. Probably much faster these days than they were in the 60’s

The right look: Conservative politicians look better and voters reward it

      Definitely😁

Oh My Gawd what a laugh.
Also odd & utterly delirious in Australia’s case.
Let’s see, there’s Turncoat, yeah nah, Joyce nah, Morrison nah, Bishop, yeah nag, Frydenberg nah, Hunt nah, WAIT…there IS Dutton. Now that’s one real beautiful hunka man right there. 😲😨 You know what I mean? Real ‘special’ like.

    • John O'Hagan says:

I note the study’s most recent beauty data for politicians is from 2010. I’m pretty sure the subsequent elections of Ardern and Trump would each alone have been enough to tip the balance the other way.

Still, the parallel finding that conservative voters are more easily wooed by beautiful candidates no doubt still stands. Given the well-established result from many other studies that they are less intelligent than their progressive counterparts, it’s hardly surprising they are more easily swayed by form than substance.

      • Razor says:

So that would be why Jacinda ran in NZ and Christina was selected in Bennelong? Need to sharpen up your baby lawyering skills JOH. A decent advocate will wipe the floor with you at this rate.

      • Boadicea says:

Well if it was Brad Pitt v. Christian Porter, for example, I don’t care what the IQ is – I’d go for Brad 🙁
But then I’m a bit shallow

  • Not Finished Yet says:

Ah yes, it is well known in security circles that it is easier to protect yourself against the hostility of enemies than the incompetence of friends.

Gulp – you cannot be serious! (to quote John McEnroe)
Why, that’s almost Trump-like in its magnificence. Well done!

    • Jean Baptiste says:

Hmmmn? Quoting a tanty chucking brat like Mac the Mouth? Hmmmn, double hmmmmn and hmmmmn again.

    • Dismayed says:

Yvonne you are just a nasty old thing. you have some serious sort of comprehension deficit. The difference between things like you and people like me is I enjoy seeing other people do well. Your obsession is of the hook again. Get the nice carer to take you back inside and give you your medication. Don’t start complaining you are the victim as usual either you nasty old thing.

      • Boadicea says:

Sorry Gary. But you’re just funny. One has to laugh. Do you write Trump’s stuff for him? There is a similarity .
You enjoy seeing other people do well? Good to hear.
Bloody hell, one would struggle to believe you enjoy anything.

        • Dismayed says:

Not sure who this Gary is but I bet he would prefer you leave him out of your obsession. I see you only put part of my comment in. Bu you like razor pathologically dishonest and the worst example of wannabe Australians. Things like you sicken me.No surprises.

    • Mack the Knife says:

Dismayed = El Magnifico? Saw a comment that you are obsessed with him Boa, think it is the other way round. Churlish comes to mind.

  • Carl on the Coast says:

Real secrets? Let’s not jump to conclusions just yet. The items in question may well be left over props from that immensely entertaining ABC series “Utopia”.

    • Jean Baptiste says:

Rather elaborate props aren’t they? I’d have thought a cover page would be sufficient.
      Now “scripts” would be plausible.

What if it’s all fake and someone’s having a wind-up?

  • Tracy says:

    Bit bemused by this.
Documents (allegedly) from assorted governments, Kevin (I’m from Queensland and I’m here to help) has wheeled out his lawyers (as you do) and journalists getting their knickers in a twist because the very thing they’ve been gloating about to cupboard/toilet boy now might land them in a 6×4? courtesy of her maj.
Of course when you buy a pice of furniture that is less than perfect (should have gone to Ikea) the first thing you do is rush off to the ABC, what’s wrong with a Current Affair?
