Humble servant of the Nation

Hazzards of entertaining the masses, one presser at a time

Pity the lot of our public administrators in these difficult times.

Governments are imperfect organs and they will make mistakes. Not, it must be said, with poor intentions. At the federal level, it’s difficult to find fault.

Paul Keating once referred almost apologetically to state MPs as low calibre, .22 pop guns when something with a little more kick is needed to get the job done. The states and territories have been reasonably good overall through these early days of the pandemic with one notable exception: the New South Wales government which has been a showcase of bad performative art like they’ve been running around trying catch the virus by waving a plastic resealable bag around in the air.

The casual air in which the NSW government waved through four cruise ships into Circular Quay, allowing infected passengers loose on the populace might be seen as a sort of typical state balls up except for the fact that just weeks prior, the cruise liner, Diamond Princess, had been locked out at harbour in Yokohama, Japan with Australian passengers having to be evacuated, brought home and placed in quarantine.

I am reasonably sure it made the news at the time.

Having learnt nothing from that episode, the sister ship, the Ruby Princess was permitted to disembark 2700 passengers at Circular Quay on March 19. Of all infection hot spots or points of origin, it accounts for the equal highest number of COVID-19 fatalities with five of its passengers having died.

Four hundred of those on board who disembarked have tested COVID-19 positive accounting for a tick under ten per cent of the total of all recorded cases of COVID-19 in Australia.

The duck shoving on who made the call persists to this day, a crow caw of bickering between NSW and the Feds — the state Department of Health, the federal Department of Agriculture, who have carriage over the Bio-Security Act, and Border Force. The fact remains it was down to NSW Health to pull the pin on that floating virus incubator and three others.

When the ‘Live’ icons disappeared from our sport channels, when the cinemas became no-go areas, when the theatres closed their doors, we were left bereft of entertainment, leaving us to fixate on news services which seem little more than a rolling series of press conferences these days.

Still we may glean some amusement from them if we look hard enough. It’s pretty much all we have left.

Two weeks ago, in one of the more bizarre press conferences in a strong field, New South Wales Health Minister, Brad Hazzard stepped forward to offer something of a mea culpa.

It started badly with Hazzard coughing into his hand and then, perhaps understanding his COVID-19 faux pas, coughed again into his bent elbow. But moments later he was giving his face a massage, rubbing his eyes and running a finger dangerously close to his left nostril before clearing his throat and taking care of business.

“If I had my opportunity to have my two bob’s worth, with the benefit of what we now know about those … people I’d have said yeah, maybe we should hold them on the ship,” the ironically named minister said.

Yeah, maybe?

Look, it’s bad, Brad. Your department has unleashed a virulent epidemic on an unsuspecting population but don’t beat yourself up about it. That’s why they put erasers on pencils.

If you were bemused by Hazzard’s performance, it was followed just minutes later by something even more jaw dropping, starring NSW Police and Emergency Services Minister, David Elliott, the Minister who decided Paris was a much nicer place to be at Christmas time than the inferno in southern New South Wales. Remember him?

A week later, he slunk back into the country and resumed his duties as if nothing had happened. Regrets, he had a few but then again, too few to mention.

The presser featured Elliott and Assistant Commissioner of NSW Police, Karen Webb and another official whose name I didn’t catch but was probably dragged in to make up the numbers for a human rose between two thorns mis en scène.

Elliott and Webb harrumphed about people failing to heed the message of social distancing which might have been a timely and useful public announcement except for the fact they did so while standing shoulder to shoulder presumably to give the media a nice, tight shot for the evening news.

Having infected not just the state but the country with nary a peep into the rear-view mirror, the NSW government moved on to set about punishing the people of New South Wales on the off chance they might spread the infection they themselves had kicked off.

While Victoria and Queensland had earlier prescribed on-the-spot fines of a gorilla and change to scofflaws thumbing their noses at lockdowns, the Premier State aimed for the more Himalayan peaks of draconian sanctions with maximum penalties of an 11 grand fine and/or six months in the clink.

That’s right. If you’re not social distancing they’re going to bang you up in a tiny bathroom with a man bearing some lovely facial tattoos that really make you think who will make social distancing problematic at best.

I pity the states who don’t have a David Elliott or a Brad Hazzard. In New South Wales, if we didn’t have a David Elliott or a Brad Hazzard, we’d have to create them for entertainment value alone. But is there enough of them to go around?

Poor old Joe Biden to now take on Donald Trump in the 2020 USA Elections, Mr Insider. We can only wish Joe well but he now faces a mauling of Biblical Proportions, Donald “takes no Prisoners” not one and he wont spare Joe, who at times was not even sure which Office he was running for FGS!

    • Jack The Insider says:

      Seen any polling lately, Henry?

      • Razor says:

Polling hasn’t been much of an indicator in recent years JTI. People in troubled times stay with incumbency. Mind you if anybody was going to be an exception to this Trump would be.

I saw some US figures around COVID this morning. In Chicago about 70% of victims are African American. Similar in other states. Not sure about NY though. The rest of the western world is about flattening to save the health system. If you don’t actually have a health system then there is no need to flatten it, particularly if the people who are going to die don’t vote for you.

        • Jack The Insider says:

I thought Trump was a deserved favourite for a long time but then we have to remember how he was elected. He had every bit of luck starting with his opponent. Now his luck has changed. He can’t hold his rallies. He clearly got C-19 wrong and exposed millions of Americans to it with mixed messages and crazy stuff. If the election is in any way normal and it should be by November, Biden should get home. Big Democrat numbers voting in primaries before the virus hit. Almost double the turn out of 2016. Trump has to hold all of Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. I doubt he’ll hold any of them.

      • Henry Donald J Blofeld says:

it is my fervent wish, Mr Insider, that Joe Biden comes in the shortest priced favorite ever and Donald blows out so I can get lots of moola on Trump. Bill Shorten paid for our trip to the USA last year. Cheers

  • Carl on the Coast says:

Yes, the unanimous decision handed down by the High Court of Australia re Cardinal Pell’s appeal, is not only a salient reminder that there are well over 1.5 million kangaroos throughout the state of Victoria, but some of them have apparently infiltrated that state’s judicial system.

  • John L says:

So there is a 747 freighter about to land in Sydney from Wuhan.
It does not take an Einstein to figure that this might cause consternation in many circles.
Wuhan happens to be the world center for the manufacture of medical PPE and this is the probable cargo.
Borderforce know of the flight. Presumably they are aware of the manifest.
They could quell all conjecture by just publishing it.
    Why haven’t they?

  • John L says:

We have this competition between countries about how many extra beds they can provide.
The Chinese build a whole hospital in the blink of an eye
The US builds one in Central Park and moves hospital ships around
The UK uses a convention center
The Indians have applied a bit of lateral thinking and used one of their greatest assets – their railways.
They will convert their sleeper carriages to mobile hospital wards.
No idea if this will work but it is impressive lateral thinking.

Sweet Mother of Jesus, Mr Insider, we see QLD LNP Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington posted a video to Facebook encouraging Queenslanders to buy local.
In doing so, she is seen handling twenty different supermarket products and placing them all back on shelves!

I would have to say if Brains were Dynamite sweet Deb wouldn’t have enough to blow her hat off, the QLD LNP is ROOTED if I may be so bold to make that observation, Mr Insider

I say Bloers, I was hoping all these women pollies in Qld, and there are a lot, might be a breath of fresh air, but blow me down and call me dusty, they are as bad, if not worse than any male pollies I’ve seen here. .22 calibre ? Keating was wrong again, more like .17 our lot.

  • BASSMAN says:

I was listening to a podcast of American medical researchers. Gladys and Morrison keeps saying that in 6 months we will be able to relax sanctions somewhat. This is crap for one reason and one reason only-the large number of asymptomatics walking around. In the USA 20% of all tested are in this basket according to the science panel on the podcast. This means there are carriers touching and infecting people and not even knowing it. Most in Oz are not even aware that for every 20 tested off the Princess boat one was a carrier/asymptomatic. These scientists concluded there should be no relenting until a vaccine is available. Only THEN will it be safe to go outside. Might be an idea to harvest the blood of carriers, find out why they don’t get sick and make a vaccine from it Bald.

    • Dwight says:

The folks waiting for a vaccine are confused. As I point out elsewhere we still don’t have vaccines for SARS or MERS. If we wait for a vaccine, we’ll kill the economy with a much higher toll.

    • Carl on the Coast says:

In view of your assessment of the alleged “crappy” advice from our leaders, I take it BASSY, that you’ll be staying in self imposed quarantine until a vaccine has been produced and we’ve all had the jab. Or will you take the risk and venture out when you consider the coast is clear.

  • Dwight says:

Latest update: Ruby Princess passenger dies, taking toll to 15

That now means that 31% of our deaths are related to this ship. And nobody has lost their job.

    • Henry Donald J Blofeld says:

Shocker, Dwight a bloody shocker. Now they are “blaming” someone from Border Force for allowing the Ship to dock.

Cheers , keep safe and healthy as we

    • John L says:

Criminal investigation started Dwight – task force of 30 from pretty well every area of the Police.
I think it is very murky.

    • Boa says:

And 50% of all 50 deaths can be linked to cruiseships, Dwight. And yet there were people leaving their 5-star quarantine yesterday saying they couldn’t wait to get on their next cruise!

      • John L says:

They would have has a different opinion if the ship had not docked . They would be still on it.

        • Boa says:

I hope Biden gets in Jack. I think the planet has had enough of Trump. If Biden can get all those who have suffered so badly during Covid 19 he should be home and hosed one would think. And everyone gets out of bed to vote this time.
But they do need someone who will be able to deal with China. Hope Biden is up to that.

      • Dwight says:

I thought of doing a semi-cruise Boa. There is a cargo ship here that takes on passengers up to the Torres Strait and back. But, my wife hates boats (and planes, and…). I’ve talked to people who’ve taken the ship and it was relaxing.

        • Boa says:

I went on a cargo ship up the coast of Norway in April last year, Dwight. Bergen to Kirkeness and back. Short stops all along the coast day and night to offload and upload cargo. Just 100 on board. Lots of snow and amazing scenery. I loved Norway too. So much more socially advanced than Australia. It may be expensive but their social welfare and environmental awareness make Australia look light years behind. People don’t mind taxes if they reap the benefits. And Norwegians do as far as I could see.

          • Mack the Knife says:

Boa, re Norway. Small population, huge oil & gas revenues. They have a sovereign wealth fund that would make Jeff Bazos drool. They can afford it.

        • Trivalve says:

Hate to state the obvious Dwight, but, take the ship. Wife hates it? You said you wanted relaxing, the solution is obvious.

      • Bella says:

They must be bonkers. Wouldn’t you think the whole ‘petri dish’ scenario would kill the industry for the next few years at least?

        • Boa says:

One can only hope Bella. I suspect though that there will be a tsunami of discount cruises on offer as they claw their way back up after dippingl their ships in hand sanitiser. And devastated economies may decide they need the berthing fees. It’s all about money. 😰
I think it’s up to countries, especially those whose lives have been made miserable by these ships (Mediterranean especially) to have a hard think about whether they want them polluting their ports with people and diesel fumes . I hope they go broke!

  • Boa says:

So Donald Trump has withdrawn funding from the WHO today. All their fault apparently.

    • Henry Donald J Blofeld says:

They are China Centric he says Boa and others the same too. Cheers

    • Dwight says:

He said he is considering withdrawing funding–$400 million in 2017. And WHO lied and covered for the CCP. Tedros got his job because of the CCP. His homeland of Ethiopia has several billions of Chinese investment. UN corruption is endemic.

    • John L says:

      Pretty much.
The WHO was following one line which was spot on.
Then the head of WHO met with Xi in China
      The WHO changed its tack.
China was the force behind the head of the WHO getting his job.
The WHO has since proved itself to be totally incompetent.
Remember, they castigated Australia for stopping flights from China after the said visit.
Trump is on the money with this one.

    • Carl on the Coast says:

And so he should Boa. The D-G of WHO was snowed by Xi in late January and has been back peddling ever since. He’s a disgrace. But no surprises, he used to cuddle up to Robert Mugabe.

    • Dwight says:

A nurse friend of mine up here in FNQ says a work mate was spat upon on the street here. Not feeling really warm myself.

  • Henry Donald J Blofeld says:

Russia in the clear, Mr Insider, re the claim they Bribed a FIFA Official Millions to get the 2018 World Cup Soccer.

Well that’s made my day a HUGE relief phewwwwwwwww

    • Dwight says:

I try not to comment too much on President Putin, Henry. Too many Russians in my life. One of whom I’m reasonably sure can get Vlad on the phone. *laugh*

    • Tracy says:

They aren’t in the clear, neither is Qatar not that it will make any difference to 2022
