Humble servant of the Nation

Death becomes our politicians.

A big shout out to Dennis Hof who overcame the severe handicap of being dead to win election in District 36 of the Nevada State Assembly.

District 36 sits inside Nye County, Nevada. The county’s principal city, Pahrump, is a solid hour’s drive east to Las Vegas. It is home to 36,000 Nevadans, wedged on the Nevada-California border and ominously and perhaps auspiciously, Death Valley lies nearby. Pahrump became noteworthy (at least to me) as a part-setting and general den of inequity for the television drama, Get Shorty.

Hof enjoyed his 72nd birthday celebrations three weeks ago in Pahrump in the company of porn star Ron Jeremy, and recently pardoned former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and died the following day.

Death became Dead Dennis. He not only won but won in a landslide. The obvious conclusion is the Democrat candidate, Lesia Romanov, may not have been entirely compelling. But here’s the rub — Hof, in a state of the deepest repose, was seen as a better candidate dead than alive.

The denizens of District 36 were not altogether comfortable casting a vote for a man who owned seven legal brothels.

But dead he was just fine, and the punters came out and voted for him in droves. Dead Dennis received 68 per cent of the vote. Had Still Vaguely in the Vertical Dennis run, it may have gone down to the wire.

What’s next? A dead Abe Lincoln to emerge from his tomb in Springfield Illinois? Dead Thomas Jefferson and dead George Washington to battle it out in Virginia’s sixth district for another shot at the title?

Worse things could happen.

I cannot for the life of me, Mr. Insider see why Peter Dutton has not yet been referred to the High Court to ascertain his eligibility to sit in Parliament.
He could even refer himself if he had a speck of decency. Come on Pete, times up buddy, you are taking the Queens Shilling daily and for all we know you might not be entitled to 1 cent let alone all the other “comforts” you enjoy.
Be a Man Peter Dutton for once in your life!

    • Bella says:

Dutton’s not listening Henry, he never has. ScuMo should refer him to the High Court but if he’s proven ineligible, the Fibs are cactus, so don’t hold your breath. Dickson will be his last hurrah anyway unless they ‘fiddle’ with the numbers. Again.

If Morrison’s a Christian his God must be a nasty piece of work.
    Shame, shame, shame.

  • Tracy says:

Guess rolling Malcolm really worked for walking dead as they amble to the massed baseball bats awaiting at the ballot box.
On the bright side we haven’t heard a shriek from Michaela Cash since

    • Jack The Insider says:

Cricket bats in this country, Tracy.

      • Failed Comic says:

Sounds like a good occasion for our Australian cricket selectors to be out scouting for some new batting talent.

      • Lou oTOD says:

Hope they can wield the willow better than those currently representing Australia Jack. With the exception of Shaun Marsh in the last ODI, which no doubt gave Dismayed the irriots.

        • Dismayed says:

Yes it did because for 18 years now he has continued to score heavily every 12th time he bats. He just does not have the ticker to do it consistently. He like his old man did averages in the 30’s. I thought Ed Cowan received more chances than anyone ever had smarsh has taken that mantle no by a long shot. At least Cowan averaged over 40 in FC cricket. Marsh might almost get there. He is due for another injury he has played 2 games straight.

If Luke Foley and David Elliot had any shame, they should both quit politics.

A GoFundMe page has already reached over $55 grand for the Melbourne homeless man who selflessly took on the Bourke St perpetrator with a random shopping trolley.
He’s been in & out of prison for some of the past 18 years but stood up when it counted, so good on him I say. A fresh page even.

  • BASSMAN says:

One tires of hearing from senior Liberals that Malcolm was knifed because he had taken the party too far to the left. Where is the evidence for this? Turnbull retained all of Abbott’s policies on emissions, refugees, climate, tax cuts for big business, renewable energy and the hard right’s demand for a plebiscite on SSM. One could hardly call this ‘a move to the left’. The confusion is the Liberals have NO IDEA what their ‘base’ or the ‘centre’ is that they keep saying they represent!

    • Jean Baptiste says:

Turnbull was promising lower electricity prices for the consumer. We can take that with a pinch of salt but clearly the risk that he actually might mean it was too great for the owners of the Lib/Nats. What an outrageous heresy he spoke of, who the f**k did he think he was, Robin Bloody Hood? Or Kevin Bloody Rudd? Taking from the rich? How unAustralian, how untraditional. The man was a bloody Socialist menace, or at best he did not take care to reassure the right people he simply had his hand up the proletarian shirt. He made them nervous.
Now shut up everyone and cop it sweet , be nice to and be thankful for the nice cornball god botherer. Consume, pray, pay, be silent, die. Your pie is in the sky.

      • BASSMAN says:

How could he ‘promise’ lower power prices when wholesale power prices have DOUBLED under his and Abbott’s watch. The high price of gas has a lot to do with electricity prices. We pay double for it here compared to WAustralia. With so much gas in this country this is NOT ON. Electricity prices could be halved if the gas prices was tackled…heard a bloke talking on this the other day who knew his stuff.

        • Jean Baptiste says:

I think it’s something to do with generations of snivelling peasants in thrall of inbred Kings and Queens BASS.
We Aussies seem to think it is an honour and a privilege to get taken to the cleaners by the big multinational corporations.

    • Carl on the Coast says:

Oh BASSY, you are so confused, again. Malcolm engineered his own demise. It generally happens to those who consider themselves the smartest one in the room.

  • Milton says:

I read that ”Trolley Man” could pocket $42000. Good luck to him, but he was more lucky that he wasn’t seriously knifed or worse.
What I found troubling was what could have happened if the gas bottles had exploded whilst onlookers were gawking and filming. I’m guessing it could have gotten way uglier and costlier.

  • Milton says:

Thus far doing 1 better than Trivalve in the epl tipping comp and he has again neglected to submit his tips. To make matters worse JtI has moved ahead of me. The Hof is having a better time of it of late than I !

  • Huger Unson says:

A shout out for the young coppers who dealt with that lunatic in Bourke St. Textbook stuff, it looked like they skilfully manoeuvred him into a position where he could be dispatched with minimum risk to bystanders, just like a training exercise I guess. Thinking about how it could have “gone wrong” a hundred different ways, we can be grateful the ending gave no ground for Matthew Guy, Jason Woods, Peter Dutton & their tribe of vultures. Of course, those clowns won’t be happy until they’ve set up a total surveillance State. (That’s 全面監視國家 in Mandarin, and a warm welcome from Bob Carr to the Harmony in Xinjiang.)

    • Jack The Insider says:

Yes VicPol did very, very well.

      • jack says:

I agree, from what i have read, appeared promptly and acted decisively.

      • Razor says:

A fine example of what not to do in that situation in fact. Every Police Service in Australia should use it as a training video to show young coppers……what not to do. He should have been shot in the middle of the chest long before he was.

        • Dismayed says:

geez fair dinkum. I have to agree. the first time I saw the video my first thought was have these 2 Policemen ever had any training in any sort of in anything?

        • Boadicea says:

Perhaps the guy with the trolley was in the way? The police are not as impressed with him as the public were.
I believe the emergency sirens tell people to clear the area? Not sure
