Politicians sucking hard in our living rooms

The week in Australian federal politics was headlined by the triumphant return of ‘Bad’ Malcolm Turnbull.

Australians had become accustomed to the pinkie-extended punctilios of Pleasant Malcolm and it has become clear they don’t much care for them.

So with nothing left to lose, Bad Malcolm got a run and delivered a withering character assessment of the Opposition leader. It was a terrific spray, no doubt, so full of harsh burns Bill Shorten may well still be plastering himself in aloe vera.

Bad Malcolm left his best line to last: “This sycophant, blowing hard in the House of Representatives, sucking hard in the living rooms of Melbourne — what a hypocrite.”

Understandably, lovers of the pugilistic arts weren’t about to get too excited. Should the People’s House ever become the House of Stoush with ‘Truffles’ Turnbull and ‘Wee Billy’ Shorten coming to blows, it would make last week’s Danny Green-Anthony Mundine fight look like the Thriller in Manilla.

Beware of the noisy Dick Smith , now due back from his regular rant over politicians ignoring the public , his usual line especially his once line ,” where is the plague of Greenies now when we need them”?
His shouting of the past , turned up the heat saying we had the creative Norm Sanders founder who took up the challenge at our leadership killing the environment clearing mass vegetations zones only to let in the scorching heat .Hay yesterday hit 47 degrees , (same temperature as Bassman and I found out in the shade 1968 with bubbling bitumen roads like riding our motor bikes in sand ) having the sun now a clear passage to heat our sun-burnt country ,
OK Malcolm and Bill ,”where is the great irrigation schemes the experts and scientists calling for to fill the vacant scorched land “? Load the ground up with greater crops and grasslands with water from the monsoonal water mass north as called for, can solve this rising heat problem that Allen Jones and Paul Keating agreed on.
Keating said way backon Jones program , the cost would be 20 billion butbwe could feed half of Asia and get that money back in one year . Where is our leaders on all this instead sneering at each other like the past few days.

  • Rodent says:

I wonder will Bill and Malcolm relax for the day and read the Peta Credlin article today on “dark ages loom” article over this” dangerous an expensive “50% target Bill has not thought through leaving families ,jobs stranded and lifestyles destroyed in the future.C’mon you leaders , start bailing us out , or we all go under just like SA is now on dumb decisions not listening to the experts clarifying that jdealogy does not solve our power crisis ahead.

ABC “Insiders” program back on Mr Insider and we often see you on that show too.

Goodness me – possible snow on Mt Wellington later today! Weird. Chilly 17 deg max.

Now I’m not religious at all but I happened on a really good new program on RN this morning – God Forbid. James Carlton discusses various issues with invited guests. Today he had a priest and a family lawyer. I like Carlton – very good interviewer.
This morning we had a talk about ”clericalism” and the relevance to child abuse in the church Jack. The priest on the panel seemed a really nice man (didn’t get his name) – he reckons celibacy is not the issue as much as clericalism is- i.e., the church considers itself above the law and entitled to maintain secrecy. Good point. The abuser is raised to a godlike figurehead who is beyond question.
Other topics were Fifty Shades Darker – good, or very undesirable movie to be on circuit with only a 15+ age limit.?
Treatment /abuse of the elderly and their value in society.
Can recommend the program – good listening.

I remember arriving in Hobart in late December one year Yvonne and it had snowed on Mt Wellington and it was bloody cold in Hobart.

      • Yvonne says:

Well it was 0 deg apparent minus 16, on the mtn last night. HB! Quite cold actually. 5 deg down here in Battery Point. Hot water bottle came out the cupboard ‘

    • Penny says:

This was particularly relevant in Ireland. The local priest was revered over everybody in the town/parish

    • Lou oTOD says:

Indeed Yvonne, the untouchability of the church as an institution has a lot to answer for. Without doubt over the centuries this has engendered the wealth of bad behaviour those within the church(es) have exerted. And it ain’t just the Catholics either, as much as they have given it a run.

An analogy that occurs to me is that of diplomatic missions. We’ve all heard of the indiscretions of diplomatic staffers, from traffic offences including egregoius damage, assaults and indeed sexual misdemeanours, where the offenders are hidden by the cloak of diplomatic immunity, and if the heat is really on the offender is whisked off to another location. Sound familiar? The outcome is the “incidents” go away or are forgotten, with a fair bit of quid pro quo from one jurisdiction to another.

Back the old days – the caravan moved on and I didn’t notice.

What I *did* notice was that this heatwave is brought to us courtesy of a low pressure system. Never seen one that wasn’t a high. Weird.

    • Jack The Insider says:

Been humid up in the Sthn Highlands, TV. First year I’ve noticed it. A summer of hot, mainly cloudy humid days 600 metres from sea level. Weird.

      • The Bow-Legged Swantoon says:

We’re just slightly higher up and we’ve had very few hot days although the humidity has been consistently high.

Raining right now with the temp around 20degC. Lovely weather for the fire brigade!

    • Yvonne says:

Yep. Apparent the high further north has given us this cold low here. Not complaining. I have my firewood order in and ready!

  • Dwight says:

Gee, the Greens are no good with money, who would have thought?

    • Lou oTOD says:

You got it Dwight, the agroGreens are no good with their own money, worse with someone else’s, and apauling if they get their hands on the public purse. Like paying alimony to someone you never met.

    • The Bow-Legged Swantoon says:

I know! Generally communists have such a sterling record of economic management!

  • Henry Blofeld says:

For anyone interested in following the excellent SBS Series on Hitler tonight at 7.35pm the final episode entitled “The Downfall”. Has been a fascinating series, Mr Insider. Tonight’s episode is about and I quote: “This final episode explores Hitler’s mental and physical decline as he is forced to confront the endgame of inevitable defeat. When The Fuhrer miraculously survives an assassination attempt, his lust for vengeance triggers an unequalled reign of terror. His military gambles prove disastrous and accelerate his downfall. As the Army refuses to counterattack and his closest allies turn against him, Hitler finally accepts the inevitable. In the depths of his Fuhrer bunker in Berlin, he rewards his hidden mistress of 13 years with marriage. Less than forty hours later asks his valet for his gun and pulls the trigger.”

Told you so……and it won’t be good.

      • John O'Hagan says:

I accept the accuracy of those figures, but I’m surprised you do, given your usual attitude to statistics. Where are the “demographics”? In particular, I draw your attention to the last line of the linked article: “No information yet about sample size and field work dates.”

        • Razor says:

I live here. I work here and I have limited access to some polling through mates. I actually reckon the figure is understated by 5%.

          • Yvonne says:

I think Pauline’s vote at the next state and federal elections is going to shock the bejeebers out of everyone, Razor. She’s the only option left for those too disillusioned to vote for any of the others – and who don’t have an independent to vote for..
I’m fortunate to have an independent in my electorate – so it takes the angst out for me and saves me a fine.
