Neymar dives to greatness, amid global ridicule

Brazilian striker Neymar has become a global joke, a somersaulting clown, a diver and a prima donna.

In a sport where being in the vertical should be a distinct advantage, Neymar, sometimes Neymar Junior (full name, Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior), has accumulated a reported 14 minutes in the World Cup competition thus far, writhing about on the deck in horrible pain, before getting lightly to his feet, sprinting off and scoring yet another goal.

Certainly, if Neymar, was an AFL player, he’d be dragged, forced to sit on the pine and think about what he did. In rugby, he’d be stomped mercilessly at the breakdown. In NRL, he’d almost certainly be killed. In soccer, or football at the insistence of my editor, he’s a gun and may one day become the greatest of all time.

SBS commentator, Craig Foster, declared him “a genius”, albeit a flawed one. Mozart was a genius. Michelangelo, too. No doubt. Unless Neymar is scribbling down a piano concerto in A Major or resolving the intrinsic paradox of transcendental bijection in the spacetime continuum before banging the ball into the back of the net, I suspect he comes up short in the genius stakes.

    Hallelujah. Boris the new Moses!
Never in the field of human ambition, has so much been so %&#@&%# up by so few for so many.

Boris now firming in the odds to be new British PM, Mr. Baptiste. Cheers

Another Russian plant Henry. With a name like “Boris.” Lawks ‘a mercy you’d think people would wake up to this KGB arch villain Putin’s wicked plan to dominate the world!

He already has 60 trillion dollars in gold stored in his secret dacha.

      • Boadicea says:

He’s almost as crazy and impulsive/unpredictble as Trump. Good luck to the Poms with that.

        • Penny says:

Boa, he is in fact very similar to Trump which is a real worry. His morals leave a lot to be desired and apparently is not averse to use threatening tactics to get his own way. I just read an article that was written in 2012 by a guy named Max Hastings as to why Boris should never be PM…..the details he provides regarding Boris Johnsons character are quite brutal….

  • Dismayed says:

The Federal Government owned Snowy Hydro company today have gamed the 30 minute power pricing structures by forcing up prices and run diesel generators while over 1000mw of Gas fired power sat idle and unused. The Federally run AEMC and AEMO do nothing to stop this blatant Cartel like behavior. In fact the AEMC has delayed 5 minute pricing for several years because it is to complex apparently but the same government wants the ridiculous NEG put together in a matter of weeks. This is what happens when the Federal government re-nationalizes 25% of the energy system and sets the rules. this is the most corrupt government in this nations history.

    • Razor says:

Hopefully some of these recommendations will go some way to stop any such behaviour. The move to guaranteeing baseload power is especially significant.

      • Dismayed says:

The report states despatachable power the cheapest to build at present is Renewables. the cons as usual are misrepresenting the report to push their agenda. No surprises.

        • Razor says:

An interesting reading of the report by you.

The ACCC state the reasons renewables are cheaper is because the RET has distorted the market. In fact when discussing the RET the report states a situation was created which was; ‘indifferent to the ability to respond to the market when demand required it”

Of further note it states the sudden closure of Northern & Hazelwood exacerbated the situation. Their closures made commercially inevitable due to the RET ‘distorting’ the market.

A couple of interesting recommendations include the wind down of the solar benefit schemes (Rec 24) and the unqualified support for the NEG (Rec 5). The recommendations regarding government guaranteed dispatchable energy in an ‘undistorted’ market only lead to two sources; Coal or Gas.

If you’re going to reply please do so without personal abuse, generalisations or vitriol.

          • Dismayed says:

Solar benefits scheme’s has been winding down for a decade anyway. the cheapest dispatchable to build is Renewables. More than half of the power Hazelwood produced has already been made up for by renewables and there is already more than enough large scale renewables committed and underway in Victoria to cover the rest within 2 years. SA has 4 gas fired plants running all the time as mandated by the AEMO. For the last week it has been Exporting power into the NEM for over 50% of the time due to Renewables. That is before behind the meter small scale solar and batteries on homes and business are taken into account which continues to increase. QLD has taken over NSW as the biggest concentration. I don’t agree with your account that the RET is “responsible” that is just pure ideology. Fossil fuels continue to be subsidized right through the supply chain from exploration right through to selling on the market and every step along the way extraction transport etc etc. This is just another report churned out that does nothing to fix the problem. The problem is the coalition and country is being held to ransom by groups of self serving ideologues who refuse to accept there is now cheaper cleaner technology available. The coalition internal struggle and the need to save a couple of seats in QLD has held the country to ransom for over a decade. Coal cannot compete economically with any other form of generation. The plants to build are too expensive take too long do not reduce emissions by more than 15%/20% at best. the fact the ACCC is offering “unqualified” support to the NEG which has not even been written yet is proof enough this report is just another waste of time. the government expect the NEG to be finished in a couple of weeks and want states to sign off 1 week later. Ridiculous and typical of the policy on the run of this coalition. As I said some time ago. the Gas cartels are gaming the system, the Government run Snowy hydro which is 25% of the NEM is gaming the system. Coal is the Most expensive option before even looking a the negative health aspects. did you see the report on Australia’s oceans heating faster than other areas forcing massive fish migration south? Oh you missed that? No this report is basically saying continue to do what is being done now. that is the WORST option. As I have said for over a decade. Gas is the transition fuel, coal will run its race over the next 30/40 years by then Gas and renewables will power the future. Smaller micro grids will become the way. you and you mates need to stop thinking of yourselves and put the National interest first.

Finally getting to see the Eng v Swe match, NBN and Foxtel restored this afternoon so streaming it through SBS On Demand on the big screen.
The government in Westminster may (no pun intended) be in disarray but for once the footy team is the biz

  • Dismayed says:

12 months after penalty rates were cut and with 12 months of data there has been NO increase in employment in the retail and hospitality sectors in fact Hours worked declined in sectors with penalty rate cuts. Employer groups in Australia lied about the impacts of penalty rate cuts and were supported all the way by the coalition. No surprises.

Spare a thought for beleaguered British PM May, Mr Insider as it’s not looking good for her. I suppose when the elastic snaps on your knickers halfway up the escalator it’s all downward from then on. Luckily POTUS Trump is arriving on her doorstep this week to give her a few pointers as to where she has gone wrong. Meanwhile, big bad Boris Johnson is licking his lips at the thought of getting his hands on the levers of power.

  • Henry Blofeld says:

Looks grim for PM Turnbull in the By-Elections next weekend, Mr Insider as we read: “Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has suffered a backlash in Queensland while losing ground in NSW and Victoria, according to a new analysis that reveals a powerful swing to Labor ahead of five byelections this month.”
When you waffle on about Tax Cuts that won’t take effect for 7 years and also Tax Cuts for Companies who will duly bank the savings and not employ extra people as the goose Turnbull says they will, what can one expect?
Turnbull as relevant as last weeks Lottery results. Let’s give Malcolm the clap, the clap he so richly deserves.

We’ll see. Longman looks pretty tight to me as does Braddon but perhaps not so much.

      • Boadicea says:

Braddon is interesting if state politics influence it. Whilst the Tasmanisn economy is flying, soaring even, there are those who feel the Libs are destroying Tassie uniqueness and selling their soul to the highest bidder. I’m in that pclass.
I would have thought the more depressed northern area would go Liberal, but it seems maybe not.

  • Perentie says:

Sweden. Lovely people, dreadful soccer team. Australia could have beaten them. Only on a penalty shootout of course. They could play a week of extra time and it would still be a 0-0 draw.
Relying on our friends from Croatia now. Wonderful people they are.

Great news coming out from Thailand with the rescue of four lads so far. Neymar may dive to greatness but he’s not a patch on what’s unfolding in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave system.

Truly edge of the seat stuff, Carl.
Hats off too, to those divers who have been doing 11hr round trips for days now – not without considerable risk to their own safety Heroes, all of them.

those of you who pay the sub, pop along to the Aus website and read Helen Dale’s piece this morning.

    very, very good.

I don’t know anything about the shenanigans today, but I could certainly fill in a few blanks from the early 80s to the 2000s, and beyond for that matter, but really there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of us with this knowledge.

the same, i have a copy of the Hand that signed the paper somewhere, thought ti was rubbish and that she had got the prize because of claimed identity, a sport of ethnic and gender participation award.
