Spare us the open letter hissy fits

Open letters are the hissy fits of our times, petulant and tedious expressions of collective outrage. It is also by some considerable measure the laziest form of protest.

In other words, the terminally aggrieved could take to the barricades but that would mean having to walk all the way to the barricades, standing around, feeling uncomfortable and what if it rained? It’s much easier to simply put names to a letter someone else had written in strident agreement with its contents.

There is one particularly egregious example of the open letter that caught my eye last night. It comes from the Columbia Journalism Review and is allegedly an open letter from the American press corps to President-elect Donald Trump.

As if journalists weren’t despised enough by the community, along comes this haughty expression of well … a journalist’s basic job description albeit dripping in sanctimony and self-importance. It even includes the grammatical venal sin of writing ‘you’re’ as ‘your’. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Given the foul language she chose to use at an anti-Trump demonstration, would Madonna care to explain the problem she has with his ”grab ’em by the pussy” remark.?

    • Jean Baptiste says:

Probably not, and she has probably never heard of Yvonne. Why should she have to explain herself. How does it follow that using foul language disqualifies one from feeling and expressing anger and disgust at some jerk boasting of “grabbing them by the pussy? ”
Why should that clown be immune to the wrath. A turkey in a tailored suit is still a turkey, and theres a turkey in the White House.
You’re on a hiding to nothing putting lipstick on that pig.

      • Yvonne says:

Plenty of turkeys in suits around, JB
The Americans voted this guy into office. For Chrissake. If those that didn’t vote now regret the fact they didn’t vote and landed up with Trump, they have to wear it. Maybe they’ll take an interest in their country and get out of bed to vote next time.
It’s too early to pass judgement on the guy. A lot of what he is saying makes sense.
OK, he’s not your usual POTUS, but they voted for him!! It’s another Brexit result – there is a vast section of the planet populace that seeks an alternative to how they perceive things. Trump is the outcome.

        • Dismayed says:

“A lot of what he is saying makes sense” Where, When? Provide. 1 example?? You have nothing. You are besotted by the personality cult. How embarrassment for you.

    • John O'Hagan says:

Important difference: she grabs her _own_ pussy.

    • Razor says:

The left can do what they want. Remember thecaccept the result stuff before he got voted in! It seems they forgot about that.

    • Dismayed says:

Yvonne it is clear from your ongoing defence of trump that you believe sexual abuse is acceptable. Disgraceful.

      • Yvonne says:

Disgraceful remark from you Dismayed. But I am sure it surprises nobody on this blog.

        • Razor says:

Yep he’s an absolute charmer this bloke……..

          • Dismayed says:

Razor “explain the problem she has with his ”grab ’em by the pussy” remark.? ” So you too support sexual abuse do you? You are the typical wannabe internet troll. You dream of being able to bully people but you do not have the emotional intelligence to handle it when people highlight your ignorance and the fact you are wrong on just about everything you comment on. You have some serious inferiority complex . When you are able to comprehend the written word you should then make a comment until such time keep your pathologically dishonest bullshit away from my comments.

        • Dismayed says:

Yvonne your previous comment “explain the problem she has with his ”grab ’em by the pussy” remark.?” I agree your comment is disgraceful. His remarks ? was him, trump, boasting about sexual abuse which you have previously dismissed and again dismiss it with your comment.
You should have a look in the mirror before attacking me. Your victim mentality is pathetic. As I said in an earlier reply. I stayed off this blog for couple of days. As soon as I commented you jumped on me due to your obsession and as usual as soon as I respond in kind you claim to be victim.

    • Dwight says:

There are media reports that Madge might need to explain her “blow up the White House” comment to the nice folks in the Secret Service.

Looks like another wave of political choice and bashing Leak this time after bitter on America now election all over . After reading Gerard Henderson , the Left has been out to shame Leak for ages jeolous of his work .Henderson on Media Watch in the Australian brings accurate reading exposing the haters ,particular the Guardian and ABC . Leak has been a great asset in the Australian cartoon section. The ‘haters’ can’t cop freedom of speech and public choice rubbishing those expressing opinions by wanting a safe strong media with great cartoons like Leak The aim by the hate club ,now trying again to kill Leak off here . What a sick lot of whinges we have whinging about Leak been the top cartoonist around for years and an honest man . This bashing will continue after they got smashed after the Trump election win , now so bitter turning on LEAK.
The bitter mob eventually defeat themselves , not the public knowing Leak will still survive.

  • Milton says:

Chris Kenny’s article yesterday pretty much nails the petulant flaccidity of the recent “protest” marches. And always a good photo op for the celebs or wannabees. Thankfully they were a lot more peaceful than a lot of the marches under the Obama regime.
Economic results, which underpin societal improvements, will be all that matter for Trump to have a respectable legacy. Personally, I think Trump’s talk of removing itself from its cop on the beat role, through which it receives nothing but scorn and ire, and putting that money to better use, is a good idea if followed up on.
And despite all its apparent woes I wouldn’t be surprised if the USA is still the number one desired destination for those in world who want to work to improve their lot in life. As opposed to Europe/Australia which are the destination’s of choice for those who want others to work to improve their lot in life.

    • Jean Baptiste says:

Yes, of course he will put that money to better use.

Paying the pipers and feathering the nests of the usual scammers who backed him and his successor into the White House. Trump will bluff and bluster promoting Trump, but he will do as he is bloody well told.
It wont take long to find out who has him by the nuts.

    • Dismayed says:

CK? Downers right hand man? Oh my goodness. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot when trying to be taken seriously Milton. Come on that is ridiculous even for you. Ever heard of the Australian Wheat board??? Want a list of at least 20 Failures by Downer when CK was working for him??

      • Milton says:

More irrelevance, Unmade. You are shooting the messenger and not the message. What has the Wheat board and Chris Kenny’s previous employment and Alexander Downer got to do with the article? You’re flailing about again son and exhibiting the concentration span of a bread roll. You’ve become a bit of a downer yourself.

  • Jack, how the hell did Bill Leak not get The Australian’s AOTY award? The winners were worthy but Leak has been brilliant all year.
On the subject of the Left’s lack of self awareness, what happened to the insistent demands for Trump and his supporters in the run up to the election that they MUST accept the results?
    Not my President indeed.
PS JOH. Fake news much? That photo you posted on the crowd size for Trump is bs. CNN photos show a full house all the way back to the Washington Monument whilst the Doninator is taking the oath.

    • BASSMAN says:

“This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period, both in person and around the globe,” White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer claimed, falsely, Saturday evening. He lied. There is plenty of evidence that the Trump administration is wrong about the crowd sizes that goes beyond what you can see with your own eyes. There were only 570,000 trips taken on the Metro, Washington’s mass transit system, on that Friday ― the lowest total for an inauguration day since 2005. (There were 1.1 million Metro trips on the day of Obama’s 2009 inauguration and 782,000 in 2013, according to WAMU’s Martin di Caro.)

Fewer people watched it on television, too. Some 30.6 million people watched Trump’s inauguration on TV, according to Nielsen ratings. That’s 7 million or so fewer than watched Obama’s first inaugural ― nearly 20 percent less. Why does Trump need to lie about this and present ‘alternate facts’.

      • Bassie, I was in NYC and Washington the weeks before the election, and beyond the election. As you know these towns are 90% Democrat. There is no Trump audience in Washington.
As we moved around talking to people the couple of GOPpers we meet expressed genuine concern for their safety, even before the election, and on election night (spent on a bar crawl thru the Meatpackers
District) the one red devil we meet swore us to secrecy, for her own safety.
The barrow salesman on 40th told us how he was daily abused and had been regularly threatened merely for selling a few pro Trump badges. Funnily enough he had no Pres. Trump badges for sale but plenty of Pres. Clinton badges- no-one had thought to produce any!
Post election I asked people what they thought the protesters wanted and one for one the response from NYer’s was “spoilt brats”.
Ditto the MSM who have doubled down on their pre election wrongness. It must kill them to have been so wrong One gigantic hissy fit.
ps Donald HAS accepted the election result. Why can’t the left?

        • John O'Hagan says:

Ok, fine, there’s a perfectly good explanation for the poor turnout (which I take it you now accept). Why didn’t Team Trump just say that and move on to more important issues, instead of spending three days lying, doubling down on the lies, and threatening anyone who didn’t believe them? They look like a bunch of amateurs.

Trump explicitly made his acceptance of the result conditional on his winning. The protesters on the whole are not protesting the result, they’re protesting Trump’s policies. See the difference?

          • Yvonne says:

Agree – so why did the media decide to make a real issue of it in the first place? Childish stuff. Who bloody cares.

          • Razor says:

I call bullshit! Of course they’re protesting the results. Just a pack of spoon fed namby pamby leftists spitting the dummy.

        • darren says:

YIS, I think too many americans have been watching too many zombie apocalypse films and mainlining on Code orange terrorist alerts. The paranoia on the american right is extreme. So these people might be genuinely concerned for their safety – but in the same way my 80 year old deaf, physically incapicated and parkinson’s riddled dad insists on locking the house up like fort knox every night because he’s convinced that sooner or later druggies are going to invade his house at night.

Sometimes you just have to look at people and say, yup, your fears are stupid (I tell my dad that all the time by the way. It really pisses him off).

    • Yvonne says:

The wonders of photoshop YIS. I agree, it’s more than likely a press beatup.
And now they squeal because he’s going to toss them out. Oh. Spare us.

Just been to see the movie Lion. Cried from beginning to end. Having a drink to get my equilibrium back. Amazing story. Even recognised the clip that was filmed on my street.! We had fun that day celebrity spotting Dev Patel and Rooney Mara.

    • John O'Hagan says:

      So you prefer alternative facts?

  • Milton says:

The Donald and Melania (looks like an older Loren), it’s like Camelot all over again.

btw what’s the name of the bldg. in front of which the inauguration takes places. Is it called Capitol Hill, and is the one from which Forrest Gump made his infamous speech?

  • Milton says:

Geez Bassman, 70yrs with another on the way! You may want to get a knot tied in that joystick of yours, old mate. What are ya, Mick Jagger or Jack Nicholson or something?

    • BASSMAN says:

Just shooting aimlessly in the dark! By the way I forgot to add re that soccer sign on fee…there is another fee…a $30 ‘coaching’ supplement for the little fella! Bloody hell! This is making severe inroads into my drinking money.

    • Yvonne says:

Never a dull moment with the Jaggers. Good on Mick!
Jade, Micks eldest child, a grandmother herself, now has a half sister who is younger than her grandchild!

  • Henry Blofeld says:

Gladys Berejiklian elected NSW Liberal leader, to be sworn in as our NSW Premier, Mr Insider. Seems to be a safe pair of hands.

  • BASSMAN says:

Well we have had lies, fake new, post truth from Team Trump and the new one in an effort to define his lies-are you READY!!!… “ALTERNATE FACTS”….bloody hell. Even better than Abbott’s ‘aspirational goals and promises’. At least Abbott was honest about his dishonesties…Fred Dagg framed that one Toaster.

  • Rodent says:

Madonna banned from many countries , now has this song out on Trump “I’m not your bitch “,” Don’t hang your shit on me””,Donald Trump suck a d..k “. Classy work from Madonna now representing the protesters knowing the large majority of women around the world despise her as a” tramp inflicting hate from her ignorant complex nude career she drops into mad rag magazines ” ,
