Wentworth by-election the preface to electoral doom for the Coalition

There’s one thing we can predict about the upcoming vote in Wentworth — it will be a Chris Gayle by-election. That is, it’s going to swing hard.

When unpopular governments begin the doleful trudge to the next election almost anything can trigger the descent into abject despondency.

At the fag-end of the Labor Kirner government in 1992, a government beset with turmoil, scandal and chaos, the tram drivers went on strike. Not only did the drivers pull the pin, they decided to make their displeasure known more starkly by driving trams up to the top of Bourke Street and along Spring Street, before parking them in long lines just outside Victoria’s Parliament House.

For the weeks the strike lasted the motionless conga line of trams remained. Labor MPs would look out their windows from their parliamentary offices at the traffic chaos below, shudder and draw the curtains before having a long lie down with a cold compress on their foreheads. It was an excruciating reminder when one really wasn’t needed of the belting that was coming their way.

Footy finals! Go Tiges. (Pity it wasn’t a Queensland team playing the Hawks).

I sometimes get the impression that some folks would like our banks to fail.

Thus far I haven’t followed the Teacher’s Pet podcast, only read a few headlines, but I just saw and add for 60minutes with this being the lead story and a journo asking the suspects daughter whether she thought her father killed her mother. Seriously, guilty or innocent, surely this is trial by media and should it be allowed? How could this be legal? Surely this matter needs to be dealt with by the police and the courts?? If this person is innocent imagine the living hell he is going through?
I’m not taking sides but what chance of an impartial jury if it does go to court?

    • Jack The Insider says:

Australia Story on ABC1 Monday at 8.00pm is doing a behind the scenes study of Hedley’s work. That might be a starting point. The podcast is brilliant and it is bringing justice that has long been delayed.

Suggest you take the time to listen to the podcasts Milt, I very much doubt Dawson is going through a living hell.
It might start when the knock on the door comes as it should have years ago

Re Bettina Arndt’s planned Uni lecture tour, the incoherent young (and not so young) lefties nowadays seek refuge behind their loudhailers in an attempt to shut her down. Gutless. There appears to be a couple on here who have a similar mo.

    • Dismayed says:

cotc you are losing it. Burke and Hare the only “couple” I recall being here have not been here a while. Oh I gather you are one of those who also wants to play down the seriousness of sexual abuse.

    • Trivalve says:

There’s a certain kind of stupid that infects undergraduates with all sorts of barrows to push Carl. I agree with you but it’s not just the lefties who are so entitled that they can behave like that. Not a good direction to be going in.

Despite the horrors that have been foisted upon us since Turnbull knifed Abbott, Shorten is hardly a lay down misere to be PM. That’s because he’s shifty and people know it (especially insider labor people) . You wouldn’t buy a meat tray ticket off him, let alone a used car. And despite Turnbull’s constant vacillation, and inability to communicate, as many of the commentariat have mentioned, due to the conservative forces within the coalition he has basically sticked to the script of Abbott’s govt. Hence the emerging growth in our economy; thank-you Tony. If anyone is guaranteed to put a prick into that balloon it is Shorten, along with that sad bunch of journeymen, Burke, Bowen and Plibersek, to name but a few.

siigghh. milton Australia’s economy has lagged the rest of the world for the last 3 years and continues to. Massive Government Spending and commodity prices have given the nation what appears to be a reasonable number but still below long term average. You also are blind to the fact the Nation has again reached record low levels of savings as it did under Howard/Costello and again become the most indebted individuals on the planet. How is it possible for you to be so blind to actualities.

    • The Outsider says:

Milton – what new policies did Tony Abbott put in place to stoke the economy?

Talking about used cars, Abbott, with his broken promises shortly after his election win, exposed himself as an economic illiterate (or telling deliberate porkies), given that he had access to PEFO before the election, so there shouldn’t have been any surprises about the state of government coffers.

Labor will win the next election purely because voters are sick of the Coalition, regardless of Labor’s shortcomings.

Rocket launches touted for Queensland as State Government launches space industry inquiry, Mr Insider.
Goodness me your humble Space Correspondent could hardly believe it but it looks like we here in QLD could soon be headed to the Moon and an “experienced” Astronaut Team Leader will be required. I of course will be tendering my humble self.
Tranquility Base here we come once again, lets get that big sucker on the Launch Pad!
