William O’Sullivan beat his 22-month-old stepson, Mason Lee, to the point where Lee died from his injuries some five days later.

Details of 37-year-old O’Sullivan’s sentencing were released in the Queensland Supreme Court yesterday. He pleaded guilty to four charges, including manslaughter and cruelty to a child under 16-years of age.

O’Sullivan has been sentenced to nine years jail, six years of which are not subject to parole. With time served he may be out in four years.

The story of short, tormented life of Mason Lee is heartbreaking. He died of horrific injuries and in terrible pain.

In 2009, Heidi Strbak inflicted a series of fatal blows on her four-year-old son, Tyrell Cobb, in their Gold Coast home. Last year Strback was found guilty of manslaughter. She was sentenced to nine years in jail. She will be eligible for parole in 2021.

I found this very hard to read, JTI. It’s hard to even imagine what it must be like for a defenseless child to live in a world of nothing else but agony and cruelty.
How can it be that someone who shoots and kills a person cleanly – so to speak – gets 20 dd years or even a life sentence, and yet these despicable turds get just a few years?
If you ask me their crime is much, much worse.

A lighter change of pace, Mr Insider if I may. We see that Jeff Horn looks certain to face Mundine in a Friday night fight at Suncorp Stadium on November 30. Strewth Mundine is 43yo now and about 10 years over his best but as we know if the $$$’s are there he will fight his Mum!
Jeff Horn from QLD that is not a good look buddy imho, no glory fighting blokes not far off pensionable age!

Mans inhumanity to Man seems to know no end, Mr Insider. Sadly when Children are abused or killed, as in your article, its abhorrent.
Who might remember the Grahame Thorne kidnapping and murder in 1960 when after his Parents won the Opera House Lottery a scumbag kidnapped and killed 8yo Graham for the money.
Have we enough Jails to put these scumbags in, Mr Insider or more to the point a Judiciary willing to send these lowlifes to Jail? Never has been in my lifetime and doubt it will change much sadly.

    Top article.

To protect children we must have the harshest penalties for any form of abuse for the defenceless. It should be inculcated into society, ten years without parole for just one hit, to the degree that all but the insane would consider striking a child.

  • BASSMAN says:

The attacks on children by the churchmen and those who are supposed to protect them
are amongst the most heinous of crimes. Yet time and time again we see lenient treatment administered by the judiciary. Fortunately the cockroaches receive real justice from their peers in the jail system.

SOUTHS:- Storm deserved to win-2 bad Ref decisions against them BUT Gagai should never have been allowed to take that kick in front instead of Reynolds. That cost us the match.

  • Milton says:

Terrible stuff. Wrong that people can plead guilty to manslaughter to lessen their sentence. It also diminishes the crime and the deceased’s right to justice. I believe most of us distinguish clearly between manslaughter and murder. Perhaps they should add child abuse to their crime and sentence.

    • Bella says:

If an adult violently hits and kills an infant, it must constitute a life sentence. There are no excuses. Nine years possibly four is not justice.
      Full stop.

  • Razor says:

Have a look at the diagram showing what happened to this poor little bugger. He never stood a chance.

WARNING:- Very graphic. (For you Bella)

Mate please don’t worry about me, I can’t get the link anyway but I can imagine as the subject is very confronting when it involves children.

Besides, not today. On a pretty personal note, my beautiful son is getting married this morning on a beach just south of Noosa & I couldn’t be happier or more excited for them. ❤❤
      Regards as always, Bella

      • Milton says:

That sounds lovely, Bella. Have a great day and prove the lie to all those mother in law jokes!

      • Razor says:

        Bella!

I hope it was a fantastic day.

If the progeny have the passion and ethics of their grandmother then they’ll be OK.

        • Bella says:

Thanks Razor, you are a sweetie.
Yesterday was very special but right at the end of the beach ceremony two humpbacks suddenly put on a five minute show of breaching, diving & pectoral slapping just offshore. This mad Sea Shepherd supporting family feel totally blessed by those moments.
The photographer captured one of those rare shots of a whale clearing the waterline but with our newlyweds in the foreground watching on in amazement.
These are the moments mate. 😍🐋💙

  • Razor says:

Forgot to add….good article JTI….we all need to change this!

  • Razor says:

1./ The case law surrounding Murder has been watered down very much over the years. No intent to kill no murder conviction. The little bit about killing someone during an unlawful act seems to have been forgotten. I’d say assaulting a kid is an unlawful act!

2./ Plea bargains are a disgrace and if the general public really knew what went on they’d be outraged. It’s often just about lazy and or incompetent Crown Prosecutors not wanting to go to trial or have a go.

3./ If the full facts around Mason Lee were know then members of the Qld Dept of Children’s Services should be facing trial for Criminal neglect causing that little boys death! In other words f**king manslaughter!

Sorry for the rant but it’s been an below average week.

    • Jack The Insider says:

Good rant, Razor. You know what you’re talking about in this one.

    • Wissendorf says:

Excellent points. Well done Razor. Great article Jack. This case, and the Tyrell Cobb case has tested my resistance to the death penalty. I’m wavering. My local Queensland MP, Stephen Bennett (LNP, Burnett) is aware of my anger. and I’ve emailed Attorney-General Evette D’arth to plead for an Appeal. I urge others appalled by these decisions to do likewise. Mp’s and Ministers take more notice when the mail starts turning to a flood.

      • Razor says:

        Yvette has a police officer as a husband….still doesn’t get it……from left of left…..

        • Wissendorf says:

I’m looking for some leadership from Palasczcuk on this. I’ll let you know when I spot her leadership on this, or anything else. I didn’t realise D’arth’s husband was a policeman.

      • Milton says:

When there is no ambiguity regarding guilt I am for the death penalty. Whilst it is not a deterrent for some it may be for others. And if it is not a deterrent it at least stops taxpayers (friends, families of the deceased in particular) feeding some non-productive grub to the tune of millions. For Christ sake some people resent giving the unemployed less than sufficient means to get by, why spend more than 100k a year on a paedophile or someone who deprives someone of .a life? Why would people be pro-abortion, or pro-euthanasia and not pro death penalty. These are not overly complex issues.

        • Wissendorf says:

You make some good points. I had no position on the death penalty until an article Jack posted some time back about Ronald Ryan. I had never heard of Ryan, and vaguely believed the death penalty had been abolished in Australia in the early 20th century. I did some followup reading about executions in Australia and England, and formed my opposition to the death penalty after reading a book by Albert Pierrepont, England’s most famous hangman, a gruesome read; he was also the son of a hangman, and his career included the hanging of Germany’s war criminals in Spandau prison after the war. He officiated at 435 executions. He concluded in his book that the death penalty did not prevent major crimes, but only served to satisfy public lust for vengeance. I’ll have to re-evaluate my opposition in light of your comments, as I am pro-euthanasia and pro-choice on abortion. I would support lifetime sentences in solitary confinement for child killers and paedophiles – let them stew in their guilt forever and never hear another human voice. The Romans had this sentencing option for some crimes, with the added caveat of the sentence having to be served in a cell where a leper had died. This shortened the sentence somewhat when the criminal literally fell to pieces after a while.
