The simple fact overlooked in Serena Williams fallout

It’s a tricky move to attach gender or race motives to an umpire officiating a tennis match between two women: one Afro-American, the other half-Japanese, half-Haitian but one by one, too many members of the commentariat to count worked overtime to pull it off.

In the morass of Op-Eds scrawled in the wake of the US women’s Open final, focus quickly became lost and one rather simple fact was ignored:

The umpire is always right.

Take this tweet from ABC presenter, Virginia Trioli. She claimed to have read almost all there was to read about what had happened and only then had been moved to judgment by way of retweet with comment. The retweet was of a judgy columnist, Margaret Sullivan, who splatters words around for the Washington Post and the New York Times, sometimes in some recognisable order. She, in turn, was tweeting up a rapidly cobbled together think piece from Sally Jenkins at WaPo. Jenkins, Sullivan enthused, got it “exactly right.”

How does this rate with Warnie’s ‘ball of the century’? Probably Warnies because he did not take advantage of footholes as much as Rashid’s.

With a best buddie in the Whitehouse seems there’s no stopping Vlad. Knocking off folks here and there with Novichok – and now WADA has rolled over and reinstated the Russian dope cheats.
He’s playing puppet master to the rest of the world.

On topic (for a change), considering the allegations directed to the umpire, witnessed and repeated to a huge audience, what would his chances be for a defamation case? A serious question. And it goes not solely to where it occurred, being labelled a thief and the rest, but to all the countries, like us, in which he was (or wasn’t defamed).
    Thoughts?

20 aged care reviews in 20 years now Royal commission. Private aged care homes making $25,000.00 $Profit on each bed each year. do we really need a Royal Commission to tell us our old folks have been commodified.
Same for Child Care and Early Learning Early Education by reducing our youngest an oldest most vulnerable most in need of direction to $ signs we have failed them, the Nation and proven all that is wrong with the neo-liberal and toxic conservative right whinge ways. No surprises.

    • Bella says:

We have failed them that’s for sure.
The Age Care CEO says six bucks a day for each resident’s meals seems okay to him while one dear old blind lady hangs on tight to her cup in the hope someone will eventually fill it!
That it all comes down to profit is disgusting Dismayed.

3rd over funding announcement in less than 12 months for the already very wealthy and over funded Private and Religious schools. NO guaranteed funding for the Public system and NO COAG to discuss it. This debacle of a government continues to cover itself in shameful class warfare pork barreling . Only the ignorant and dishonest claim the non Public sector saves more than it costs. No Surprises.
