The simple fact overlooked in Serena Williams fallout

It’s a tricky move to attach gender or race motives to an umpire officiating a tennis match between two women: one Afro-American, the other half-Japanese, half-Haitian but one by one, too many members of the commentariat to count worked overtime to pull it off.

In the morass of Op-Eds scrawled in the wake of the US women’s Open final, focus quickly became lost and one rather simple fact was ignored:

The umpire is always right.

Take this tweet from ABC presenter, Virginia Trioli. She claimed to have read almost all there was to read about what had happened and only then had been moved to judgment by way of retweet with comment. The retweet was of a judgy columnist, Margaret Sullivan, who splatters words around for the Washington Post and the New York Times, sometimes in some recognisable order. She, in turn, was tweeting up a rapidly cobbled together think piece from Sally Jenkins at WaPo. Jenkins, Sullivan enthused, got it “exactly right.”

WINX wins George Main Stakes at Randwick for her 27th consecutive win, Mr. Insider, what a performance. She possibly reminds you of your Family’s Manikato
Possibly the Cox Plate late October and then maybe retirement?

Jack, what is a nice God-fearing man like Mr. Morrison doing in politics, the work of the devil?

  • Carl on the Coast says:

Jack, I had a chuckle when I read the image you created regarding your reference to the “human pit bull with an emotional range to match.” It crossed my mind that your colorful turn of phrase was perhaps largely influenced by the recent performance of the primary character in your most excellent piece.

  • Henry Donald J Blofeld says:

“Everybody with any degree of commitment to the party and its long-term future wants to see this guy go, he’s just useless,” said one local member on Saturday.
Moderate Liberal Party members are deeply unhappy with Mr Abbott’s failure to honour his “no wrecking, no sniping, no undermining” pledge after being ousted by Malcolm Turnbull in 2015.
Abbott on the nose big time in his own seat, Mr Insider.
What a disgusting sight he is sitting on the Backbench, FGS go Abbott!

Henry, If Tones got the push from the reps he would stand for the Senate and probably pick up 1.5 Senate seats.
Compare with Rudd and Turnbull he is a rank amateur.
Rumours have it that the Progressives in the Liberal party are thinking about destroying the party totally and then rebuilding it even if it means being out of power for many years.
It is all reminiscent of the Calwell period of the Labor Party when the factions were at each other throats all the time.

Don’t agree JS, those so called “progressives” are more often than not moderates and last I looked they were just as much entitled to an opinion, he keeps pushing his mate Villatora and keeps getting knocked back.
To get into the senate he’d have to push out Feverranti Wells, can’t see the Libs pushing out yet another female even though she’s useless, interesting that Abbott was all for transparency and democracy in the branches but nobody knows just what the exact figures on his preselection vote were.
The Wentworth pre-selection vote was made public

        • JackSprat says:

If he stood stand alone Tracey – not as a liberal
The person who made most of the noise was a staffer from another pollie if the rumours are orrect

          • Tracy says:

Get your drift JS but I think Abbott is so on the nose it’s a tough one to call.
The electorate has changed, he hasn’t and his total lack of self awareness really makes you wonder about his state of mind.
Margy Abbott must be dreading the day he’s home 24/7 don’t see her around as much.

        • Carl on the Coast says:

          68 -30, Abbott’s way.

    • Jean Baptiste says:

Be quiet Henry. My new fave pol Tony Abbott is doing a wonderful job on the Liberal Party.

He should be reinstated as leader. God likes him better than Scotty, He told me. God is an old fashioned fire and brimstone type of dude, He thinks Scotty is a beige grinning born again dolt. I wouldn’t lie to you Henry.

  • Milton says:

To the umpire’s credit, despite the verbal barrage unleashed by Williams, he remained adamantine. They usually do.

  • BASSMAN (Fender) says:

That Cartoon….just about the most honest cartoon I have seen this year and puts Knight amongst the doyens. Interested to see what Grinsiders say ’bout it on Sunday.

I see Tones is in deep shit in Warringah. They don’t like him! Problem is, Tones is unemployable outside of ‘Tics.
A good ‘real Liberal’ independent could unseat Tones. I don’t think Malcolm’s money will be there to save him this tyme. But wait. Would Labor want him gone? He is Labor’s best asset.!Abbott is at odds with his own voter base in Warringah re SSMarriage, renewable energy and climate change. Abbott has single handedly destroyed the Liberal Party. You can trace all of this turmoil back to the day he said “No wrecking, sniping, etc etc”. Just like his promise “No cuts to the ABC, no new taxes” blah blah b;ah. The bloke is a serial liar!
Watching Abbott being defeated in Warringah would be the delicious encore to seeing the defeat of the worst government in our history with a bonus defeat of Dutts in Dickson. This will be unlikely though as Dutts has amassed heaps of bread ($600,000 and growing) to buy his seat. That and the redistribution in his favour should see him home. But not Homeland.

What a great game mate. 🐇

    • Tracy says:

I think Dean Harris (labor candidate) will give him a run for his money.
Already campaigning and getting himself known, may not be enough but if Tones needs a change of underwear on election night it will be worth it

  • Milton says:

Pauline Hanson – Shaz or Shazza
Julie Bishop – I’m with stupid

    • Tracy says:

I think she’s usually Jewellery Bishop Milt, do like the pearls though.
As for Serena, retire, go away it’s not the first time she’s been abusive. She excellent form in that area

  • Milton says:

    On nicknames I’ve got:

Shorten – The shit eating grin; The Manzier
Burke – Burko; read my lips
Joyce – the should be cut snake; Florid; Mr Spittle
    Abbott – Chucky
    Pyne – Mr Sheen
Credlin (?) – Why the long face?
    McCormack – the Silver Areolar

  • Wissendorf says:

I gave up watching tennis because tournament officials across the globe have failed to stamp out grunting. Grunting is cheating. It’s purpose is to put the opponent off, and mask the contact noise of ball on racket, to try and induce a mistimed hit. There are times you’d swear the competition was actually a grunting competition, and it infests both genders. Nadal is a horror to the same extent as the Williams sisters. I’ll follow croquet – it’s quiet, they play this at Wimbledon too.

    • Trivalve says:

Agree. It can be unwatchable. Sharapova is the worst.

    • JackSprat says:

When people have to take ear plugs to a match that they paid money for it is time to do something about it – eg Sharapova.
I think they are stamping it out gradually.
I just turn the sound off.

    • Arthur Daley says:

Well said Wissendorf, totally agree me old china. I might go as far as to say, even though she was very easy on the mince pies, Miss Sharapova diminished my interest in watching tennis on the telly, and completely destroyed my penchant for perving in one foul swoop!
Oh well, at least one can’t get into trouble with ‘er indoors.
