Humble servant of the Nation

The only Newspoll that matters for Turnbull is the thirtieth

Malcolm Turnbull set the trap for himself on September 14, 2015. Standing on the parliament lawns, he announced his resignation from cabinet and challenged a first term prime minister who had been in the job for two years to a spill in the party room.

Turnbull gave three reasons. A lack of economic leadership. A lack of cabinet process and the loss of 30 consecutive Newspolls.

“The one thing that is clear about our current situation is the trajectory. We have lost 30 Newspolls in a row. It is clear that the people have made up their mind about Mr Abbott’s leadership.”

Last year he told Miranda Devine he had regrets.

“I do regret having said it only because it allowed people to focus on that, rather than substantive reasons,” he said.

This is classic Turnbull. He doesn’t regret making the statement. He regrets only that his words have been manipulated and misconstrued his words by others.

Funny, Carl, but I can’t recall your criticism of Tony Abbott’s words in relation to Julia Gillard’s government:

“We’ve been very well served by the media in Australia. Yes, politicians don’t always like the coverage that they get, but if you are in public life you’ve got to take the rough with the smooth.”

    Or

“A vigorous, critical media is an important part of a healthy democracy and I think the Prime Minister should accept that.”

Or Abbott’s advice to Gillard: “If you want better coverage, be a better government.”

    • Carl on the Coast says:

I say TO, in relation to the Abbott quotes you cited re the Gillard government, yes he did indeed take the media’s “rough with the smooth”. Took it unflinchingly in his stride too. It was the true mark of the man don’t you think?
However, some of his supporters apparently considered he was taking chivalry (ie. the social code of courtesy, honour, morality, etc) just a little too far. Of course, that sort of polite behavior was quite uncommon during the perfidious, back-stabbing RGR years, as you may well be aware.

Re Abbott’s specific advice to Gillard you quoted, couldn’t be critical about that. Not in a long shot.

Perhaps I’m missing something here TO, just what was your point exactly ?

Hey Raz, please try harder! Remember the Looter’s TV ad about the negatively-geared landlord class that was supposed to be made up of teachers, policemen, nurses and tradies, ordinary battlers just trying to get ahead? It didn’t help when the poster family the Libs used to officially launch the scare campaign was able to be painted as wanting an investment property for their toddler. What sort of country is it in which the only way you can expect to get into the housing market is if your parents start saving for you when you are aged one? That severely tarnished the Liberals. They lost the argument. Treasury Modeling showed surgeons, anaesthetists, finance managers and lawyers were the overwhelming beneficiaries of neg. gearing.
You also overlook both Turnbull, Morrison and even Boof (Kennett) in 2005 defined negative gearing as a rort. Only about 10 per cent of us neg gear. The 90% who don’t are paying their tax. Labor’s policy of helping people to buy their 1st home but not their 12th is a good one. Treasury proved Morrison lied. Negative gearing largely is engaged by the already well heeled-50% of the total tax benefits of negative gearing go to the top 10% of income earners. The modeling also showed surgeons, anaesthetists, finance managers and lawyers are the overwhelming beneficiaries of neg. gearing. $11billion a year this rort costs us! Wasn’t there one Un National member with over 30 properties neg. geared? RORT!

Yes, as I was opining earlier, a sizeable cohort of the electorate had a good look at Opposition leader Abbott over a 4 year period and voted him and his party onto the treasury benches in a historic landslide. Enter Lucy’s offsider and Abbott was gone within two years.

The party ended up with a dud at the helm who was also subsequently credited with a landside, only it was in the wrong direction.

It would have been preferable if Abbott was able to ride out his full term and have the electorate to again decide the outcome. If he was so off the pace, as some on here have implied, then we’d currently have a government led by a chap reportedly schooled and steeped in subterfuge, sophistry and skulduggery.

    De gustibus non est disputandum.

Pauline Hanson spitting phlegm and bile once again, Mr Insider, re the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday. She has denied she’s a racist after condemning the “disgusting” focus on Australia’s indigenous heritage at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.
In an extraordinary interview with Sky News, the One Nation leader also said she considered herself “indigenous” for simply being born in Australia.
“I thought it was disgusting, absolutely disgusting,” she said.
We astute QLDers gave her One Nation Party the short back and sides at last years State Election where she only secured 1 seat in her Home State Base.

I see Dutts is heavily campaigning.Sed yesterday thousand of boats will arrive the day after Labor gets in and the terrorists will be given a red carpet entry to Australia. Scare scare scare….policies? Not a chance. This is all you will hear from the Liberals. The boats? Still coming. They are just turned back.We never get told though…. all secret in The Land of Dutts. Caging innocent kids and their parents who have committed no crimes has not stopped the boats. It is one thing and one thing only…the boat turnbacks.Very simple for Labor to continue the same policy if they wish to extend the cruelty.

    • JackSprat says:

      Hey Bassy

      What is your solution?
At least Rudd admitted that he had gotten it wrong and underestimated the people smugglers.

      • BASSMAN says:

My solution is what I said when this blog started and even before Howard came up with the idea-just turn the boats back…U would only have to turn a few back and they would get the message. The SM Herald printed my letter on this when the boats first started coming under Howard. Those on the islands? i would have brought them here years ago or to NZealand simply on economic grounds…a billion a year just to save face? U right wingers must be crazy. Debt? Deficit? Horror?

    • Razor says:

The boats will start arriving the moment Labor gets in Bassy.

      • BASSMAN says:

As I have said and as it has been proven-boats are ALWAYS coming-they get turned back.
        Secrecy mate,secrecy. Mushrooms son mushrooms.

        • Milton says:

Bassman – on one hand you say you only have to turn a few back and they will get the message and then you say they are always coming. Which is it?

        • Carl on the Coast says:

BASSY 3.10am, 7 Apr says: “… U would only have to turn a few back and they would get the message.
BASSY 3.12am, 7 Apr says: “… boats are ALWAYS coming”

You been on the magic mushrooms mate, just exactly what MESSAGE are they getting BASSY???

          • BASSMAN says:

They are ALWAYS coming…but knot in the numbers you keep scaring us with!
Turnbacks reduce them to a trickle.
